About Me

Globe-Trotting to Writing: A Brief Biography

My childhood was an unusual one for an American—spent mostly abroad in Germany and Italy, the dependent of a diplomat. My experiences overseas fired much of my personal and professional passion today, including a great love of food, classic literature, history, and religion.

When it came time to direct my own educational path, I chose English literature as the foundation. An avid writer, I felt that literature would be the spark for original material. My goal: an MFA in Creative Writing.Life’s happen-stances and opportunities changed all that when, after graduation, I veered into a short-lived career in banking and, ultimately, into graduate school for theology. My studies at The Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California were a continuation of a rigorous Roman Catholic religious education, but seemed to lack practical application. It was in Berkeley that I discovered a need to engage in hands-on ministry.

At the same time that revelations were striking in Berkeley, I began to experiment with cooking. It was a natural progression for me, growing up around good food in Europe, and I discovered it was also a natural talent—the perfect hands-on ministry to meet the needs of others. Hence, my departure from the JSTB and enrollment at Johnson & Wales University in Denver, Colorado.

Since my graduation from the Culinary Arts program at JWU, my career has taken yet more twists and turns. I spent some time managing campus publications at JWU, which led to a job at DiningOut magazines. I have been writing and editing for these publications (distributed all across the U.S.) since 2006.

While I continue to write about the world of food and its many entrées into culture, I also write more creatively and philosophically. I maintain a blog, L’Atelier de W.T. More, which serves as both a writing portfolio and a venue for parsing philosophical and theological thoughts. I find that I am still deeply interested in theology, and continue to discern a possible career in ordained ministry. As part of that discernment, I am active in my local church–Saint Paul Lutheran Church in downtown Denver. I function as deacon, volunteer, committee member, and Taizé worship leader. My work at Saint Paul is perhaps some of the most fulfilling and satisfying work I have yet done in my life.

In addition to these activities, I am constantly working on freelance writing assignments for various Denver-area publications. For just over a year, I worked as Restaurant Critic for YellowScene magazine in the north Denver area, and have written for The Denver Post. More recently, I have written columns on homosexuality and religion for OutFront Colorado in an effort to close the gap between faith and LGBT communities. I have also done some restaurant consulting work, and continue to build marketing and PR contacts in the hospitality industry.

When not engaged in work or side projects, I spend time biking—long distances, when the weather allows. I am also always seeking out new and creative ways to express my passion for writing, the culinary arts, and theology. It’s truly a wonder at how many points these three intersect.

I currently live and work in Denver, Colorado.
